Running: Where To Begin?
I run for many reasons. First, running is a great cardiovascular sport. Second, it helps clear my mind, release stress, and when I’m finished, I’m usually more focused, relaxed, and ready to conquer the day at hand. Recently a friend asked, “What did you do to start running?”
When I started running, I could barely run 15 minutes before I was out of breath. I normally ran two to three times a week. I did this for about a month. Each time I ran, I set a goal of increasing my minutes on the treadmill anywhere from two to five minutes more than the last run. As time went on, I begin to read websites such as Marathon Rookie and Runner’s World to learn more about the sport and improve my ability. As I begin to increase my speed and really commit to running, I decided to get my gait tested at a specialty running store. This is probably something you should do when you first start because the right person can really determine whether you need a neutral shoe for cushion versus a stability shoe for support. Buying and running in the wrong pair of shoes can cause serious injury to your feet, especially if you’re training for a half-marathon or marathon. In addition to wearing the right gear, I also found a running buddy. Running with others is fun, and it also challenges you, as well. (Accountability, anyone?)
How about you? Why do you run? If you’re not running, it’s never too late to start. We all start somewhere.

My mind is frozen right now. It’s summer time, the kids are out of school, and it’s way too hot to play outside. On a day like today I would normally take them to the pool, but with a 6-year-old, 4-year-old, and 14 month old that is a challenge in itself. That is not going to happen. So what did I do to fit in exercise? (Remember I started my second round of P90X yesterday?!)
Well, I attempted to workout in the garage this morning. Normally my kids will chill long enough for me to “bring it” with Tony, but for some reason after the long holiday weekend they were way wound up. SO, I got through 20 minutes of Plyo, and since 10 this morning it has been a long Press Pause.
So my workout had to wait. Until now. I’m off to “bring it” in the peace and solitude of my garage while my wife puts the kids to bed. And yes, I’m starting Plyo all over again from start to finish! My health is important, so I make time for it. It is not always convenient, but I do it.
Are you making time for your fitness? How do you make it work with your family?

Today marks a new journey in fitness as I begin another 90 days of P90X. Growing up I always found it extremely difficult to put on lean muscle mass. I tried every fitness program until I ran across P90X. Like most people, I was one of those guys who was up late one night watching infomercials; and found P90X. As I watched the results of testimony from others on what P90X did for them and saw with my own eyes their transformation pics I thought what the heck I will give it a shot. And I’m so glad I did. Both my wife and I completed the full 90 days and our lives have been changed for the better. During this second round I am going to try and build upon what already is a solid foundation as I attempt to add more muscle mass. Two of the things I will be doing differently are lowering my rep count and adding some resistance like a weighted vest.
The P90X newsletter has an excellent article on gaining mass during P90X for men who want to put on size.

I love running on Saturday morning. I am fortunate to live in the amazing city of Austin, famous for the trails around Lady Bird Lake. When I can’t get downtown, though, I take a run in my neighborhood. What’s important is that I get moving. It gives me a chance to not only get great cardiovascular exercise, but I am also able to clear my mind. And I love inviting people along for the run. Exercise is better – funner – when we do it together. If you can’t run, don’t worry about it. Just move. Every. Day. Little things add up to big results.
So what are you doing today? Get up and move!
