Want to Prevent Injury? Here is How I Roll!

A year ago after suffering an injury from running I was turned on to the concept of foam rolling from a fellow runner. They gave me this blue foam tube and a few exercises that assured me if I would commit to using it that it would improve the functionality of my lower body and most importantly help prevent future injuries on the pavement. So I thought, “What the heck? I’ll give it a shot?” And that is exactly what it felt like the first time I was on the ground rolling on this foam like tube, A SHOT! To my amazement I had no idea the level of pressure the  muscles undergo after extreme and intense use. After a few weeks of commitment, I could honestly say that I began to feel more relaxed and less fatigued. If you have never tried foam rolling before or after your workouts I highly recommend giving it a shot! No pun intended. :) Here is a great blog on how to use a foam roller. Hope this helps.

P.A.P. “The Number One Reason To Buy P90X2!”

I am currently on my third round of P90X and like many P90X’rs I am anxiously waiting the arrival of P90X2 that releases at the end of November 2011. One of the many reasons I am looking forward to P90X 2 is P.A.P. Some of you might be asking what is P.A.P.? Well, I’ll do my best to describe in layman’s terms.

P.A.P. stands for Post Activation Potentiation. It is rapidly becoming one of  the best workout methods known in the scientific world. P.A.P. is what professional athletes are turning to build strength, agility, & stamina to give them the edge they need to become an elite athlete in their respected sport.

The way P.A.P. works is not complicated at all. In fact, it is quite the opposite. First, you do heavy lifting. Immediately following the heavy lifting you do some explosive training. So what you are actually doing during this time is using the slow twitch muscles first, followed by using the fast twitch muscles. By doing this variety of moves you are maximizing the potential of what your muscles can do during a set of explosive training. This is where you get the term Potentiation from. It is where you get the  “full potential” use of your muscles. Talk about maximizing your results! P.A.P. does the job! As Tony would say, “Results city baby!”

P90X2 is going to take this new, but simple approach to working out and incorporate it in such a way that makes a 35 year old like me feel like I’m 25 again. While we all know that we can’t prevent aging, we can use methods such as P.A.P. to make us feel younger and still help us achieve desired goals on our fitness journey.

I invite you to join me this coming January as I begin P90X2. Be sure to check out my results from P90X. I know what it takes to keep the weight off. After struggling with weight gain for years I found P90X and since then have never gone backward. I can help you too.

Listening To Your Body

Well, in just a few short weeks I’ll be embarking upon my second marathon in two years. Lately, I’ve been dealing with some discouragement. Two weeks ago while I was on one of my long training runs I noticed afterwards that my left foot began to swell. Later that day I began to experience a dull achey pain.

At first I thought it wasn’t nothing serious. At this same time last year I was icing both legs and not in near as good as shape as I am now. Thank you P90X! When the swelling continued after another week of running I decided to go get an X-ray and then reality set in. Come to find out I suffered a stress fracture right above my big toe. A common running injury that happens when training for distance running.

My Doctor told me I probably could still make my race due to the fact that the bone had already began the healing process but making my goal for this year might not be doable.

I am discovering that the older that I get the more I need to learn to listen to body. I have certainly pushed myself this time around. And there have been times when I probably should have backed off instead of revving up. I am discovering that if I am going to make fitness a lifestyle and not just a fad or phase of my life that there maybe days that may need modify or even rest. Remember muscles need rest to grow. In this case, my feet did. Or at least I think?

I’m I discouraged about my injury? Yes. The thought of dropping out has crossed my mind several times. But then my mind went back to a old saying that has become Tony Horton’s mantra of P90X, “Do your best and forget the rest!”

Some times stopping and pressing pause isn’t a bad thing. If you are in the middle of intense training and need a “break” take it. No pun intended. :) But resting a day or two may just be what you need so next time you can press play and go all the way! Good luck. See you at the finish line.
